Ham and calories, what nutritional values does it provide your body with?

It has been firmly proven that the secret to healthy eating that keeps the excess kilos at bay is in a healthy and balanced diet. It is easy to say, but not so easy to carry out in our frantic daily routine, where the rushing around always play against our best intentions in the kitchen. This is often linked to the ups and downs of the science of dietetics, opposite nutritional trends and experts who do not agree, which sometimes leads us to not knowing what we should eat. The definition of a food by its strict number of calories leads us to simplify and forget about the nuances. To better understand this we should look at the the ham-calories relationship: 309 calories is equivalent to 100 grams of Joselito Ham.

If the 100 grams were rice instead of ham, it would be 328 calories. If we compare it with 100 gr. of pasta, it would be 359 Kcal. A few slices of Joselito ham equivalent to 100 grams have almost half the calories as a few chocolate cookies (550 Kcal/100 gr). However, the number of calories of the ham may vary slightly depending on where the cut comes from. The leaner part of the ham has fewer calories, although it has a higher salt content. Salt is also important when considering the nutritional parameters of ham because Iberian ham has less sodium than other hams. For example, three slices of Jamon Joselito is equivalent to having 3 grams of salt per week, it is a ham that is defined as almost sweet.

Joselito ham is the healthiest cured meat and one of those with the lowest amount of saturated fat (the most harmful). Have you ever tried taking a slice of ham, squeezing the fat and noticed how it melts on your finger? Unsaturated fats have a lower melting point, so fat melts when you squeeze it. More than 50% of the fat on Iberian ham is unsaturated fat, especially oleic acid, which is why the properties of the acorn fed Iberian pig meat are compared with those of olive oil.

Joselito helps protect the heart

According to data from the Study on Nutrition and Cardiovascular Risk in Spain (ENRICA), 50.5% of the Spanish adult population suffers or is at risk of suffering from cholesterol problems. As the population of our country ages, the risk of coronary problems increases. For that reason, we at from Joselito we undertook an non-stop research task to demonstrate a latent hypothesis during sufficient time. A 100% natural ham like Joselito, rich in oleic acids, could have beneficial effects to help protect of the heart. Here is the result of our research with the MAYO clinic:

The high oleic acid content of Joselito ham, provided by the acorn, helps to improve cholesterol levels (producing more HDL cholesterol in the body) and reduces triglycerides. In turn, it produces an increase in antioxidant substances that prevent oxidative stress and prevent the consequences of free radicals, helping to prevent cardiovascular diseases.

The percentage of proteins in the acorn fed Iberian ham is higher than in any other type of ham, as well as being of high biological value. One hundred grams of Joselito ham is equivalent to 33% of the recommended daily protein intake and 24% of the recommended daily consumption of group B vitamins. The nutritional value of ham recommended in hypocaloric diets is such that it provides a great boost of vitamins and minerals. Although it must also be borne in mind that if the ham is cooked it will lose those nutrients.

Joselito ham can be part of a healthy diet

If we are looking at a balanced diet, even when we are aiming to lose weight, consuming between 30 and 50 grams of ham up to twice a week is not a problem. Ham should be consumed moderately and in the right amount, if it is a diet with the amount of calories necessary for the proper functioning of our body and we also have an active lifestyle, then adding a few servings of ham will not make you put on weight. You have to keep in mind what goes with ham and the calories of the pairing, avoiding alcohol means avoiding calories.

Another element to highlight about ham is its significant contribution of phosphorus, up to 30% of the recommended daily amount. It also has appreciable amounts of tryptophan, an essential amino acid in nutrition, which promotes the release of serotonin and is an important regulator of the nervous system . Joselito Ham, being a 100% natural product, provides a multitude of nutrients and benefits. Thanks to the Joselito research team and the laboratory, located in Jerez de los Caballeros (Badajoz), we are finding out more about Iberian ham and all the factors that make it a perfect union of health and pleasure.
